Used and New Auto Loan Rates Have Already Climbed Since July

2026-09-15 13:30:00

The rate move is already in the data

Cox Automotive’s mid-September Auto Market Weekly Summary (published September 14, 2026) says new-vehicle loan annual percentage rates have risen 35 basis points since July, and used-vehicle loan rates are up 11 basis points over the same period. The same note ties that pressure to higher Treasury yields and a more expensive borrowing environment for consumers.

That is a different story from a single bank survey print that barely moved. The Federal Reserve’s Bankrate Monitor series on FRED put the national average for a 60-month new-car loan at 6.90% for the weeks of September 2 and September 9, 2026 (updated September 10). Survey averages for a defined prime-leaning profile can sit still while funded contract rates on the ground drift.

What that means for Texas pre-approval this week

A payment quote built last month is not a plan. Pre-approval—or a serious soft-check path followed by a real application—puts your credit, income, down payment, and vehicle type on one sheet before you fall in love with a unit on the lot.

TX Auto Approval helps Texas shoppers start a pre-approval conversation. Bad credit, no credit, and prior bankruptcy are welcome. You do not need a Social Security number to start, and only a soft credit inquiry may be used at the first step. That is not a guaranteed approval, a promised APR, or a specific monthly payment.

Prep that still wins when rates are moving

Budget the total picture. Cox’s same weekly also notes August consumer prices held at 3.4% year over year with energy pressure in the mix. Build room for insurance, fuel, and maintenance—not just the payment line.

Gather income and debt basics. Pay stubs or deposit history, rent/mortgage, and revolving balances. Faster desks still need a clean story.

Shop in a short window. Compare APR, term, amount financed, and fees—not a napkin monthly alone.

Keep price, trade, and finance separate. Ask for the vehicle price before trade and the finance terms without optional products rolled in by default.

Takeaway: Funded auto loan rates have already climbed since July. Get a Texas pre-approval standing built on your file before you negotiate a payment that will not book.
