Can You Start a Car Loan Pre-Approval in Texas Without a Social Security Number?
Yes, you can start without one: the first step here asks for 3 things, your name, cell phone number and ZIP code, and no Social Security number. The full application does ask for an SSN, because lenders require it to run a credit application.
Why the first step does not need an SSN
The short form is just a request to be contacted about financing. Nobody runs credit on it. That lets you talk to a financing specialist and ask questions before you hand over sensitive information.
When an SSN comes in
If you continue to the full application, it asks for your date of birth, address history, employer, income and Social Security number. Lenders use these to pull your credit and make a decision. The SSN is stored encrypted on this site and sent only to the dealerships and lenders working your request (see the privacy policy).
Soft and hard credit checks
A soft inquiry does not affect your credit score. A hard inquiry, which a lender runs on a full credit application, can. Lenders decide which type they use and when, so ask before you authorize a full application.
If you do not have an SSN
Say so when the specialist contacts you. Some lenders have their own rules for applicants without an SSN; whether one is available depends on the lender, and this site cannot promise it.
